A pattern study bridging cultural elements of East and West
Overview
From 2022 to 2023 I conducted a study on visual pattern symbology and calligraphy within North Africa, The Middle East, and Japan.
From this, I created a series of typographic and layout design explorations across a digital and physical mediums.

Influences
The concept originated as an exhibition highlighting the intricate and often less represented presence of calligraphy in the western world, especially when paired with modern pattern motifs.
East Asian street-fashion,
in particular, the tech-wear movement, served as another catalyst when constructing patterns and forms within the contemporary kufic-style calligraphy used.

Patterns were applied to prints
before I copied them into 3D models I designed to scale in AutoCAD & Autodesk Inventor
Production
I engineered my CAD models and drawing schematics for local fabrication labs. I provided manufacturers materials that I could later assemble into a physical product.
My designs accounted for electronic LED lighting controls and motion sensors that I later installed by hand.

The Result
A series of print, digital, and product designs embodying style and versatility
Print samples
Product prototype sample
